Leaning 9/27

Learning is an experience where a person gains information that they didn't have prior. Students are able to learn when the teacher is using techniques that are comfortable to them. I went to a drivers ed conference today and the presenter said the students are loosing their ability to concentrate because they are in a media world with everyone trying to sell them something. He was a previous CEO of a Marketing Firm that built a curriculum that is built to catch their attention. We might have learned by a teacher preaching to us but he said that the new generation needs to be sold on the idea. I thought that this is an interesting topic.

  1. I find this absolutely disheartening. . . Not untrue, not undeniable, but heartbreaking, nonetheless. . . There have been many a time I have made mention to the shortening of our society's collective attention span. This marketer/educator of yours appears to feel the same. With the expansion of the internet and information literally at our fingertips, this genearation of young people will need our help trodding through these years more than they will ever understand.

My hope is that we, as educators, feel it is important to continue to teach what needs teaching. If our students can take away just a little knowledge of why things are the way they are, then we will have been successful.
