How do teacher effect learning? 11/16

Teachers effect learning by letting the student's think for themselves. Some times I as a math teacher like to see if the students can come up with the formula to a problem. This gives the students a sense of ownership to the problem which in the long run they will remember for a lifetime. I do need to work on this as a teacher because I do jump to help students without letting them think. Teacher can help by asking probing questions so the student comes up with their own answer.

  1. One of the hardest things to learn as a teacher is to ask a really good question that causes the students to think and not give a "primary answer". The second equally hard thing to do is to WAIT for a student to come up with the perfect well thought out answer. I know what I'm thinking, so sometimes I resort to playing that one game, "Guess What the Teacher is Thinking." There is danger in that.

  2. I agree with you on teachers need to allow students to think for themselves. They learn more and will Teachers are like parents in having to learn to let the student/child figure out how to solve a problem by themselve.

  3. I completely agree with you BJ. I keep telling myself that I need to allow my students to take ownership of their learning and to discover that they can come up with the answer on thier own. I am much to eager to jump in and bail my students out and by doing so, I am hindering my students from future learning.

  4. I think that you are right the more the students "own" the idea the more they will retain. I also think that many teachers struggle with the same thing, that is why we got into the profession because we want to help people but sometimes we can help them more by letting them struggle.
