How can a teacher effect learning? 11/23
A teacher can effect learning by simply letting the student communicate what they are thinking and then fill in the nessecary holes. When helping students one on one I always like to see what the student knows, alot of the time I hear "nothing" or "I don't know." I probe the students to give me something they know. What operation is being used, what theorem is being used, or what do we have here and where do we want to go." Allow the students to think is a great way for students to learn. Never give them something they already know.

I catch myself often in class being lazy in my questions and responses to students. I am contest to ask the question "do you have any questions?" or "how are things going?" and I am too often content with the generic replies of "no" or "fine". I need to remember to follow up those questions with more "probing" questions, like you put it, to make sure my students are learning and understanding. I also agree with allowing students to work and think. As teachers we can't make everything easy for our students nor can we give them all the answers. We need to facilitate student learning through sound strategies and put the responsibility of learning on the student, with the support and aid of the teacher.
ReplyDeleteso I was wondering how the social constructivist theory might have impacted your ideas of the ways to impact learning....for example, can you see value in putting students in authentic problem-solving situations?
