What is Learning? Week of 11/16
Learning is more than just gathering new information. While reading Bruner I had an understanding that he was saying if we don't use the information as adults why learn it. I teach math and I know that some people will not use what I teach them in their adulthood. I always tell my students that math is great for deep thinking skills. They also learn problem solving skills by asking themselves the question "This is what I have and this is where I need to go how do I get their?" I understand what Bruner is saying but I disagree just a little.

BJ, I think Bruner was right on with the observation you noted, if we are not going to use it as an adult, is it really worth learning? I commented on the same thing and put the quote right in it. I can see why you might differ with some of what he said (being a math teacher), yet I really think that in making it 'easier' to 'deliver' math through our school system as it is, we have isolated the USE of math from the situations to which it is APPLIED daily. I think we have to use more of the situated learning and discovery together.
