What is Learning? 11/9
Learning is where the student is able to take the lesson and apply it to the real world or the community. In my lesson for class I did it on Linear Programming and I recently just taught it to my Algebra 2 Students. They were amazed how they could find to maximize their profits or minimize their costs. I had students say " I could use this in the Real World" For me that is music to my ears.

Pointing out the real world application makes all the difference in motivation for students. I think sometimes they get in the habit of saying most learning won't apply to them in the future. It's maybe a lazy habit. It takes more work to see the application. When what we learn is relevant, it's so much easier to connect and remember.
ReplyDeletesounds like a good learning experience for your students! I always liked math but I know a lot of my classmates said stuff like "when am I ever going to use this in real life?" I think it might help if mathematics concepts were not separated from their applications in physics, chemistry, and so on. Short of a total redesign of state standards, maybe team planning around a common problem would help.
